The race to the pole has long attracted leadership experts, who like to contrast the Amundsen focus on efficiency and innovation with Scotts more deliberate dedication to scientific pursuit. But another polar explorer Ernest Shackleton faced harsh conditions in a way that speaks more directly to our time. The Shackleton expedition, from 1914 to 1916, is a compelling story of leadership when disaster strikes again and again. Consider just a handful of recent events: the financial crisis of 2008; the gulf oil spill of 2010; and the Japanese nuclear disaster, the debt ceiling debacle and euro crisis this year. Constant turbulence seems to be the new normal, and effective leadership is crucial in containing it. Real leaders, wrote the novelist David Foster Wallace, are people who help us overcome the limitations of our own individual laziness and selfishness and weakness and fear and get us to do better, harder things than we can get ourselves to do on our own. As a historian at the Harvard Business School, I wrote a case study about him that has drawn more interest from executives than any other I have taught. As some talented research assistants and I worked on the study, I was struck by Shackletons ability to respond to constantly changing circumstances. When his expedition encountered serious trouble, he had to reinvent the teams goals. He had begun the voyage with a mission of exploration, but it quickly became a mission of survival. This capacity is vital in our own time, when leaders must often change course midstream jettisoning earlier standards of success and redefining their purposes and plans.

org/wiki/EUREKA Prometheus ProjectAs AllCarTech reports, GMs new portable vehicle to vehicle communication system, currently in development, is testing the technology in two familiar platforms, a transporter the size of a typical GPS unit, and a smartphone app. The system relies on established Intelligent Transport System ITS technology such as Dedicated Short Range Communication DSRC, which allows for wireless communication between vehicles, cyclists, police officers, construction sites, and pedestrians within a quarter mile range. GMs vehicle to vehicle communication systemThe benefit of this portable system is that it allows drivers to see not only whats right in front of them, but also about a semi truck thats stalled a quarter mile ahead, hard braking drivers, slippery roads, upcoming intersections, stop signs and other as yet unseen hazards. In addition, DSRC equipped smartphones, carried by cyclists or pedestrians, could alert drivers to their presence ahead. The automaker says it is working on embedding these communications systems into new vehicles, but it is also looking at ways to retrofit the technology into vehicles that are already on the road. GMs vehicle to vehicle communication systemAccording to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, vehicle to vehicle communication systems could help avert nearly 81 percent of crashes in the United States.

A walkout by dock workers represented by the International Longshoremen?s Association would bring commerce to a near halt at ports from Boston to Houston. AP Photo/Steven Senne, FileNEW YORK AP ?Dockworkers along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico agreed Friday to extend their contract for more than a month, averting a weekend strike that could have crippled major ports from Boston to Houston and bottled up billions of dollars' worth of cargo. Talks aimed at reaching a new contract covering the 14,500 longshoremen will continue during the extension, which runs through Feb. 6. The dockworkers' union and an alliance of port operators and shipping lines agreed to the extension after resolving one of the stickier points in their negotiations, involving royalty payments to longshoremen for each container they unload.

Approximately 80 Scarsdale students and staff members began a mandatory 14 day quarantine Saturday, Oct. 17, after being exposed to someone in the Scarsdale High School cafeteria during the PSAT that morning who developed COVID 19 symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus later that day. Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services Eric Rauschenbach would not say if it was a student or staffer. The way the room was set up, if we either released the position of the student in the room or whether it was a student or someone else, it would be too easy to identify that person, he told the Inquirer. The person, who had no known contact with a COVID positive person and who had not traveled to a restricted place, contacted the district around 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. on Saturday, October 28 in the gymnasium of Colville High School. The Colville School Board passed a controversial nondiscrimination and privacy policy 4 0 on Oct. 18 after two hours of testimonials.
